Hoof wall separation disease

Connemara ponies that are homozygous for an autosomal recessive genetic defect develop hoof wall splits and separation as early as six months of age. The distal margin of the hoof wall is brittle. Signs vary between individuals but the disease can lead to chronic inflammation, severe lameness and laminitis. Management of more severe cases can be challenging.
