Grammar point 5.4. Hindi Compound Verb Construction 4

This construction is composed of two verbs (V1V2). V1 is in the past participial form of a verb, and any verb can occur as V1. Only रहना can occur as V2, and V2 receives all the inflections for tense, number and gender of the subject. The past participial form of the V1 has to agree with the number and gender of the subject. When the V1 is in the past participial form, it indicates a continuation of the state of a verb, as illustrated in the following examples.

हम कल कई घंटे तक कुर्सियों पर बैठे रहे | We remained seated for several hours yesterday.

उसके मकान का दरवाज़ा हमेशा खुला रहता है | The door to his house always remains open.

(Ex.4.1) Complete the following sentences using the V1 + रहना compound verb construction that denote a continuation of the state of the V1 verb, and translate them into English.

  1. मुर्दा शेर कई दिनों से यहाँ (पड़ना रहना) है।
  2. लोग सुबह से स्टारबकस के बाहर (बैठना रहना) हैं |
  3. काली बिल्ली कुर्सी पर (सोना रहना) है |
  4. वह सारे दिन पलंग पर (लेटना रहना) है |
