Grammar Notes 10.3: Question tag
A question tag is formed by adding न at the end of the sentence. It is mostly used in conversational Hindi. Native speakers use tag question instead of “yes/no question.”
For example:
| Simple sentence | Tag question |
| वह घर जाता है| | वह घर जाता है न? |
| वह घर नहीं जाता है| | वह घर नहीं जाता है न? |
| मैं स्कूल जा रहा हूँ| | मैं स्कूल जा रहा हूँ न? |
| मैंने इस किताब को पढ़ा है| | मैंने इस किताब को पढ़ा है न? |
| मैं एक घंटे दौड़ा| | मैं एक घंटे दौड़ा न? |
| राहुल मुझ से मिलने आ रहा था| | राहुल मुझ से मिलने आ रहा था न? |
| तुमने कुछ पूछा था| | तुमने कुछ पूछा था न? |
| लड़के किताब पढ़ेंगे| | लड़के किताब पढ़ेंगे न? |
Note:
- न at the end of the imperative sentence expresses polite request.
For example:
बैठिये न| Please sit.
यहाँ आओ न| Please come here
आज मुझसे बात कीजिए न| Please talk to me today. - The question tag is not possible with question sentences.
