Grammar Notes 11.3: भर construction

भर is used as a suffix in Hindi giving the meaning “throughout, full, across, whole, or complete” depending upon the context. It can be used for time, place, measurement etc. Here are some examples:

बच्चा रात भर टीवी देखता रहा। The child kept on watching TV the whole night.

डिनर पार्टी में ज़्यादा खाने के लिए दिन भर ख़ुद को भूखा रखना सही है या गलत? Is it right or wrong to starve yourself all day long for eating more at a dinner party?

कैदी घंटे भर बाद पकड़ा गया। The prisoner was caught after a full hour.

उसका गुस्सा पलभर में भड़क उठता है। His anger blows up in the space of a moment.

हिमाचल यूथ बिग्रेड ने शहर भर में विरोध रैली निकाली। Himachal Youth Brigade raised a protest rally across the city.

अमेरिका में बढ़ी पॉलिटिकल टेंशन के चलते यूएस समेत दुनियाभर के शेयर बाजारों में घबराहट है। Due to increased political tension in the US, there is panic in the stock markets worldwide, including the US.

गाँव भर में गेहूँ का आटा न मिला। The wheat flour was not found in the village.

इस गाँव से कोस-भर दूर एक स्कूल है। About a mile away from this village, there is a school.

3.1 Fill in the blanks with the correct form of भर.

3.2 Translate into English

1. कोस भर नदी टेढ़ी है।
2. गज भर जमीन के लिए पड़ोसियों ने टेम्पो चालक को पीट-पीटकर मार डाला।
3. योग केंद्र रात भर चलने वाले कार्यक्रमों की वजह से प्रसिद्ध है।
4. इस पद्धति को संसार भर में वैज्ञानिक कार्यों में उपयोग में लाया जाता है।
5. इस परीक्षा के लिए राज्य भर में कुल 335 केंद्र बनाए गए हैं।

3.3 Translate into Hindi

1. The cat keeps waking throughout the neighborhood.
2. She keeps studying throughout the day.
