Grammar Notes 9.2: Relative-correlative construction

In relative-correlative construction, a relative word is used along with another corresponding word. The words are used in pairs which correlate two clauses. Relative pronouns begin with ज. Below a table is given to show which relative word appears with its respective correlative counterpart.

Examples:

जो आदमी वहाँ खड़ा है, वह मेरा दोस्त है। The man who is standing there is my friend.

जो लड़के उस कमरे में हैं वे मेरे दोस्त नहीं हैं। The boys who are in that room are not my friends.

जिस देश में ताजमहल है उसका नाम भारत है। The country where Taj Mahal is, its name is India.

जिन लोगों को तुम जानते हो उनके नाम क्या हैं? Tell me the name of the people you know.

जैसे मैं कहता हूँ वैसे लिखिए। You should write as I say.

4. जब भी वह मुझे फ़ोन करता है तभी मैं उसके साथ हिंदी में ही बात करता हूँ।
5. जिस दिन तुम दिल्ली पहुंचोगी उस दिन मेरी बहन आपको स्टेशन से घर ले जाएगी।
