Grammar Notes 9.1: Passive voice

In Hindi, the passive voice is formed with the perfective participle of the main verb and the helping verb जाना (to go):

लिखना to write लिखा जाना to be written
दिखाना to show दिखाया जाना to be shown

In the passive, the perfective participle agrees for gender and number with the subject, and the tense and mood are expressed by the appropriate form of the helping verb जाना. The passive voice in Hindi is usually used when the doer of the action is not needed or is general, not significant, or unknown:

यहाँ हिंदी सिखाई जाती है। Hindi is taught here.
यहकामकलकियाजाएगा। This work will be done tomorrow
कहा जाता है कि … It is said that …

The doer of the action in passive sentences is uncommon.  When it is mentioned, the doer is marked by the postposition के द्वारा.
It is not usual to express the logical subject (agent) in the Hindi passive construction, unless it is absolutely necessary to indicate an agent. The agent is implied, even though it is not expressed. However, when we want to express the logical subject/agent’s inability to do something, the logical subject has to be mentioned. In this case, the logical subject/agent is expressed with the postposition से.

घर की सफ़ाई नौकरानी के द्वारा
की जाएगी।
The house will be cleaned by the servant girl.
मुझसे सेब नहीं काटा जाता। The apple cannot be cut by me.

The passive voice can be used in almost any tense, aspect or mood.
