Grammar Notes 11.4: To know (जानना, मालूम होना / पता होना, आना)
a) जानना: The meaning of this verb is “to know” and it is always used in direct verb construction. It always agrees with the gender, number and person of the subject. Here are some examples:
| मैं हिंदी जानता हूँ। | I know Hindi. |
| मेरी बहन फ्रेंच नहीं जानती है। | My sister does not know French. |
| क्या आप हिंदी जानते हैं? | Do you know Hindi? |
| वह मेरा फ़ोन नंबर नहीं जानता है। | He does not know my phone number. |
| वह हिन्दी लिखना जानती है। | She knows how to write in Hindi. |
b) मालूम होना / पता होना: The meaning of this verb is “to know” but has the general connotation “to have information about something or someone.” It is always used in the indirect verb construction. Here are some examples:
| मुझे भारत के बारे में मालूम/पता है। | I know about India. |
| उसे मेरा फ़ोन नम्बर मालूम/पता नहीं है। | He does not know my phone number. |
| क्या आपको मालूम/पता है कि यह बस कहाँ जाती है? | Do you know where this bus goes? |
| उन्हें हमारे बारे में सब कुछ मालूम/पता है। | They know everything about us. |
| हमें मालूम/पता है कि वह कब स्कूल आएगा। | We know when he will come to school. |
c) आना: When this verb is used in indirect verb construction, then its meaning is “to know.” It is generally used to express to knowledge of some acquired skills or how to do something.
| मुझे हिंदी आती है। | I know Hindi. |
| मेरी बहन को हिन्दी नहीं आती है। | My sister does not know Hindi. |
| उसे हिन्दी लिखना नहीं आता है। | She/he does not know how to write in Hindi. |
| क्या आपको गाड़ी चलानी आती है? | Do you know how to drive a car? |
| उसे कुछ नहीं आता। | She/he does not know anything. |

4.3 Translate into Hindi
