Grammar Notes 11.1: Reflexive pronouns

Reflexive pronouns are pronouns that are preceded by a referent in the same clause. In Hindi, reflexive pronouns are अपना, अपने आप, खुद, and स्वयं/ स्वयम्. आप/अपने आप and खुद are quite common in Hindi, whereas स्वयं/ स्वयम् is more formal and archaic. The oblique form of अपने आप is अपने. अपने आप, खुद, and स्वयं/ स्वयम् are invariant forms and thus do not change in the oblique case. Here are some examples:

यह काम मैं खुद करूंगा। I will do this work myself.

वह अपने आप घर जा सकती है। She can go home by herself.

आप अपने बारे में कुछ बताइये। Please tell me something about yourself.

मैंने अपने आपको शीशे में देखा। I saw myself in the mirror.

वह अपने आपको बहुत होशियार समझता है। He considers himself very smart.
