Grammar Notes 1.3: Duplication of Interrogative words
In Hindi, an interrogative word (question/wh- word) is repeated twice to express the plurality of the answer. When the expected reply to a question involves multiple answers, the question word is duplicated. For example:
आपने पार्टी में क्या क्या खाया? – What (all) did you eat at the party?
The expected reply to this question is certainly more than one food item, because at parties usually there is more than one dish. To make it clearer the English translation could be “what all did you eat at the party?” The word “all” can be added to the interrogative word to make the question precise.
| कल पार्टी में कौन कौन आया? | Who (all) came to the party? |
| पिछले साल आप कहाँ कहाँ घूमने गए? | Where (all) did you travel last year? |
| बचपन की कौन कौन सी कहानियाँ आपको याद हैं? | What (all) childhood stories do you remember? |
| किस किस के पास किताब नहीं थी? | Who (all) did not have the book? |
| कैसी कैसी मज़ेदार चीज़ें यहाँ हैं। | What kind of interesting things there are here. |
