2.7.8: Conjunciones adverbiales variables

There are also adverbial clauses that vary between subjunctive and indicative depending on the message that the speakers wants to transmit. Some of the conjunctions that work this way are:

Mientras=while, during
Cuando=when
Después de que=after
En cuanto=as soon as
Tan pronto como=as soon as
Hasta que=as long as

These conjunctions are used with the indicative to indicate the habitual nature of an event.

A common use might be in a sentence such as this: Cuando termino las clases, voy para mi casa.

This sentence means that normally when the speaker finishes class, they go home.

“La distribución interior va cambiando para que el consumidor experimente la sensación de “nuevo” cuando vuelve a la tienda”

And they are used with the subjunctive to indicate that they will happen in the future.

A sentence similar to the first example is: Cuando termine las clases, voy a ir para mi casa.

In this case, the speaker has a plan to go home after class in this instance. The use of the subjunctive is what calls our attention to the fact that this event is not habitual.
