Why on earth do we need to learn these skills?

Ideally In-house lab skills are performed by Certified Veterinary Technicians, Veterinary Nurses, Veterinary Assistants, and other Veterinary Support Staff, however every Veterinarian should be familiar with these skills!

  • Likely there will be a time when a Veterinarian will need to know how to perform them-weather emergency, staff on break, unforeseen circumstances…
  • Many Veterinarians have the responsibility of training staff and assuring quality control.
  • Knowing these skills deepens our appreciation for our staff, as without them, we could not provide service for our clients and their pets!
  • Reminder that these simple tests give us a wealth of knowledge!

IMPORTANT TIP: PCV (packed cell volume) Read first (using PCV chart) and note Buffy coat characteristics and serum color, before breaking capillary tube to determine Serum protein!
