SA Otic Exams and Ear Cleaning

It is very common to examine the ears of all SA patients with an otoscope.  The proper technique is important to provide comfortable experience for your patient, and always looks good when you know how to handle an otoscope in front of a client.

Ear cleaning is often misunderstood by clients.  Clients may not be cleaning the way you expect, which can lead to improper treatment of the ear infection.  Actually showing clients how to clean the ears in the exam room and having them participate is a great way to help them feel comfortable with the technique.   One can also come up with a personalized plan for the client and show them how to use treats, how to restrain, use of towel wrap to prevent a mess, wiping the ears with cotton balls etc… or if owner is unable to perform the task, a CVT appointment can be scheduled to clean their pet’s ears.  A well trained CVT is vital to this task-as a DVM, you will be able to train your staff!
