Approach to Pet and Owner and Basic Pet Handling/Restraint

The approach of a veterinarian to a dog or cat and their owner is an important concept that draws on clinic teamwork at every level to recognize, prevent, and respond to FAS (Fear, Anxiety, Stress) of patients, clients, and clinic personnel.

With proper preparation and practice, powers of observation, and knowledge of body language and pharmaceutical intervention, we can create a more pleasant experience for all concerned, a win-win-win situation to clinic or home visits.

Acknowledging that there are many influences on all aspects of a patient visit, we can systematically improve the clinic or home visit for all with a few important protocols and client communication.

Fear Free, Low Stress, and Cooperative Care principle are important for the entire clinic to know, understand and practice.  In this module we’ll build on what you are learning in the Fear Free Introductory course required for all First Year Vet Students at U of MN, CVM.

We emphasize doing vs. watching as it is in the doing that we really gain the skills needed, we get better and better with practice.  I’m still learning new tips and tricks-this is a life long experience to learn and incorporate things in your tool box.
