Common In-House Lab Skills How To Do…
PCV (Packed Cell Volume) anemia/normal range/high PCV
TP or SP (Total Protein/Serum Protein) low/normal range/high
USG (Urine Specific Gravity) is USG appropriate for clinical situation? PU/PD- expect to see low USG as kidney actively diluting, kidney unable to concentrate or dilute appropriately-fixed range 1.008-1.012, dehydrated high USG.
FNA (Fine Needle Aspirate)
Blood Smear-gives important hints to potential diagnosis
Why on earth do we need to learn these skills?
Ideally In-house lab skills are performed by Certified Veterinary Technicians, Veterinary Nurses, Veterinary Assistants, and other Veterinary Support Staff, however every Veterinarian should be familiar with these skills!
- Likely there will be a time when a Veterinarian will need to know how to perform them-weather emergency, staff on break, unforeseen circumstances…
- Many Veterinarians have the responsibility of training staff and assuring quality control.
- Knowing these skills deepens our appreciation for our staff, as without them, we could not provide service for our clients and their pets!
- Reminder that these simple tests give us a wealth of knowledge!
IMPORTANT TIP: PCV (packed cell volume) Read first (using PCV chart) and note Buffy coat characteristics and serum color, before breaking capillary tube to determine Serum protein!
