The following open source material is being provided as a free and common resource for students in First-Year Writing courses at the University of Minnesota. These chapters cover elements of sentence construction, punctuation and word choice, and also include optional topic and end-of-chapter exercises that you can complete on your own or with a partner to check for understanding.

A chapter for multilingual writers has been included to help as students develop familiarity with writing conventions. This chapter can also be helpful for all writers.
