Yemen: Nuha Albaqal
Born in Sana’a, Yemen, Nuha Albaqal holds a bachelor’s degree in architectural engineering from the University of Science and Technology in Sana’a (c. 2016). She participated in the restoration efforts in Old Sana’a as part of the Cash for Work: Promoting Livelihood Opportunities project (c. 2018–2022), a collaborative project of multiple partners including the European Union, UNESCO, and Yemen’s Social Fund for Development (SFD) to provide professional development opportunities to youth in Yemen. Through the project, she received training to assess and restore damages to buildings. She then began work with the General Organization for Preservation of Historic Cities in Yemen (GOPHCY). She has supervised restoration efforts for some of the historical and cultural properties in Old Sana’a. She has been featured in the UNESCO Gulf States and Yemen newsletter (January–March 2024), and in the article, “Women at the Forefront of Preserving Culture Heritage in Yemen,” published by UNESCO (2016).
