Slovakia: Mária Krukovská

Born in 1930, Mária Krukovská was the first Slovak architect to participate in the International Union of Women Architects (UIFA). She was a presenter at the second congress of the International Union of Women Architects (UIFA) hosted in Monaco (1969), which was themed “New Cities, the Contributions of Women Architects.” Krukovská held a diploma in architecture from the Faculty of Architecture and Construction at the Slovenská technická univerzita (Slovak University of Technology) (STU) in Bratislava, Slovakia (1948–1952) and was one of the first women architects permitted to graduate from this institution. After graduation, Krukovská worked as an architect in the design studio of the Bratislava branch of Stavoprojekt (c. 1952). She also participated in the Experimentálka housing project in Rača, assisting with the implementation of new technologies for residential construction (c. 1960–1969). Krukovská was featured in the exhibition “Emancipated: The First Generation of Female Architects in Slovakia,” curated by Henrieta Moravčíková in the foyer of the Faculty of Architecture Slovenská technická univerzita (STU) located in Bratislava (2015). Krukovská died in 2020.
