Niger: Mariam Issoufou
Mariam Issoufou is founder of Mariam Issoufou Architects, an architectural firm with offices in Niamey, Niger; New York, the United States; and Zurich, Switzerland. She holds a bachelor’s of science in computer technology from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana; a master’s of science in computer science from New York University in New York City, New York; and a master’s of architecture from the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington. Issoufou serves as the Chair for Architecture Heritage and Sustainability at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich) where she is a full professor (2022–). She was shortlisted for an Aga Khan Award for Architecture (2022), named by the Royal Institute of Canada as one of their 2020 Honor Fellows, named as one of fifteen “Creative Women of Our Time” by The New York Times Style magazine (2020), named a finalist for the Royal Academy of Arts Dorfman Awards (2019), named a Laureate of the Prince Claus Award (2019), shortlisted for the Dezeen Awards (2019), awarded the Silver Global LafargeHolcim Award for Sustainable Architecture (2018), awarded the Gold LafargeHolcim Award for Africa and the Middle East (2017), recognized in the Gold category for Alumni Awards issued by the Department of Architecture at the University of Washington (2017), and won an American Institute of Architects (AIA) Seattle Merit Award (2016).
