Moldova: Rosalia (Etti-Rosa) Spirer
Born in 1900 in Galati, Kingdom of Romania, Rosalia (Etti-Rosa) Spirer was the first woman architect of the historical region of Bessarabia (currently the Republic of Moldova and parts of Ukraine). She held a diploma in architecture from the Higher School of Architecture in Bucharest, Kingdom of Romania (1925). After graduation, she moved to Bǎlți (modern-day Republic of Moldova, 1932), and began to work in the technical office of the city hall, overseeing the architectural designs for the municipality and county of Bǎlți until 1940. During World War II, she evacuated to the Saratov region in the Soviet Union (modern-day Russia). When she returned to the former Kingdom of Romania (1944), which became known as Moldavian SSR (c. 1940s), she worked as an architect on post-war restoration projects in Chişinǎu in the Department of Architecture and Construction at the Moldgiprostroi Institute. Spirer died in 1990 in Chişinǎu.
