Indonesia: Daliana Suryawinata
Born in 1980, Daliana Suryawinata is a co-founder (with Florian Heinzelmann) of SHAU, an architecture and urban design firm in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and Bandung, Indonesia, that focuses on socio-climatic architecture and urban design for tropical regions; a co-founder of the Livable Cities Taskforce of the Indonesian Diaspora Network; and a co-founder of the Kota Tua Creative Festival in Jakarta, Indonesia. Suryawinata holds a bachelor’s of science in architecture from Tarumanagara University in Jakarta, Indonesia, and a master’s in advanced architecture from Berlage Institute Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
Suryawinata worked for the Office for Metropolitan Architecture, MVRDV, and West8 in Rotterdam (2005–2007). She has served as a jury member for the EUMies Awards for Young Talent (2025), a local ambassador for the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) International Awards (2024), a juror for the Holcim Awards Asia Pacific (2023), an executive board member for the Indonesia Nederland Society (2018–2023), a juror for the New Capital of Indonesia masterplan Concept Competition (2019), and a commissioner of the Indonesian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale (2014). She is currently an editorial board member of The Journal of Architecture (2024–).
Suryawinata’s and SHAU’s notable accomplishments include the following: the ARCASIA Gold Medal (2025), Architizer A+ Awards (2025, 2020, 2017), a feature in the book 100 Women Architects in Practice (2023), a Good Design Award Japan (2023), inclusion on a “Most Influential List” by Tatler Asia (2021), inclusion as one of the “100 Women to Watch in Architecture” (2021), recognition for the “Building of the Year” by ArchDaily (2021); inclusion on the shortlist for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture (2019); inclusion on the list of the “99 Most Inspiring Women” issued by Globe Asia (2019); the Holcim Award for Sustainable Construction Silver Prize Asia Pacific (2017); the “Small Firm of the Year in Sustainable Architecture” award of American Architecture Prize (2017), the Indonesian Diaspora Award for Innovation (2012), and the ARCHINESIA Certificate of Appreciation (2012).
