Finland: Signe Hornborg

Born in 1862 in Turku, Finland, Signe Hornborg was the first Finnish woman and possibly the first woman in Europe to hold a diploma in architecture (1890). She was also the first woman to enroll in architecture at the Polytechnic Institute of Helsinki (1888). She had an influential father, Anders Johan Hornborg, who helped her obtain the special permissions she needed to study architecture part-time at the school; the institute did not formally permit women to enroll as students with status equal to that of their male peers until 1896. Hornborg worked in private practice with architect Elia Heikel Architecture and then architect Lars Sonck, both located in Helsinki. She was feature in the posthumous exhibition “Good News: Women in Architecture” curated by Pippo Ciorra, Elena Motisi, and Elena Tinacci at the Maxxi Museum in Rome, Italy (2021–2022). Hornborg died in 1916 in Helsinki.
