Czech Republic: Milada Petříková-Pavlíková
Born in 1895 in Tábor, Austro-Hungarian Empire (modern day Czech Republic), Milada Petříková-Pavlíková was the first Czech woman to graduate with a diploma in architecture (1921). She began studying architecture at the Czech Technical University in Prague, Ausrian-Hungarian Empire (Czech Republic) as a private observer. The government had forbidden women to study at technical universities (1914) until the First Czechoslovak Republic was established (1918); the legislators of the new government then permitted women to pursue their education at all universities (1918). After graduation, Petříková-Pavlíková passed her state examinations (1921). She worked on commissions and collaborations with her husband, Theodor Petřik (c. 1921–1950). During this phase of her career, she designed for housing issues associated with women and children. She also published in magazines, including Ženský svět and Stavba. After WWII, Petříková-Pavlíková transitioned her focus to urban planning. Towards the end of her career, she participated in the Rudný Project, developing plans for mining plants (c. 1952–1956). Petříková-Pavlíková died in 1985 in Prague, Czechoslovakia (modern day Czech Republic).
