Cyprus: Maro Efthymiades-Adjini

Born in 1937 in Cyprus, Maro Efthymiades-Adjini is considered one of the first Cypriot women recognized as a professional architect. She began her architectural studies in Greece (c. 1950s) and returned to Cyprus where she established an architectural practice (c. 1960). A portrait of her was featured in the expansion of the exhibition “Frau Architekt,” organized by the Goethe-Institut of Cyprus in Nicosia and curated by Teresa Tourvas and Müge Riza (2021). The expanded exhibition featured the addition of 11 Cypriot women architects alongside the 22 German women architects who were featured in the original exhibition at the Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM) in Frankfurt, Germany (2017). This exhibition is considered one of the first exhibitions dedicated to showcasing and celebrating the work of women architects from Cyprus. Maro Efthymiades-Adjini died in 1997.
