Bosnia and Herzegovina: Vesna Bugarski

Born in 1930 in Sarajevo, Bosnia (modern day Bosnia and Herzegovina), Vesna Bugarski is considered the first woman architect in Bosnia (1964). Bugarski studied architecture in Belgrade, Serbia, where she was the only woman in her cohort (c. 1960s); she transferred to an architecture program in at the University of Sarajevo, where she completed her education (1964). After graduation, Bugarski worked for Prosperitet, a design firm in Sarajevo. She temporarily relocated to Denmark, where she worked in interior design, broadening her design skills. When she returned to Sarajevo, she continued working in interior design, and gained an interest in art, particularly in weaving tapestries, which became a part of her artistic practices. Bugarski was unexpectedly killed by a grenade (1992) during the Siege of Sarajevo during the Bosnian War.
