Argentina: Filandia Pizzul
Born in 1902 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Filandia Pizzul was the first woman to graduate with a diploma in architecture from the University of Buenos Aires in Buenos Aires, Argentina (1928). During her career she worked as a sub-inspector of works in the Advisory Commission of National Asylums and Hospitals affiliated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Worship, and Charity; as the General Director of Workshops and Conservation for the Ministry of Public Health; as the General Director of Conservation for the Ministry of Public Works; and as an advisor to the National Director of Architecture. She was also the first director of the library affiliated with the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Buenos Aires, which contains a room named in her honor (1994). Pizzul was a member of the Central Society of Architects and of the Organizing Committee for the Fifth Pan-American Congress of Architects. She was a founding member of various aviation organizations, including the University Aviation Center, the Argentina Chamber of Aeronautics, and the Argentine Albatros Gliding Club; and she was a member of the Center for Civil Aviation. Her architectural drawings were published in the Architecture Magazine of the Central Society of Architects (1926), and she became the first woman to earn her pilot’s license in Argentina (1928). Filandia Pizzul died in 1987.
