5.7.4 Uses of se

As a final point in our discussion of se, we would like to leave you with a list of the many uses of se.  If you have thought while working through these activities that there are lots of different ways to use se, you’re completely right.  This table is only a reference.  You don’t need to memorize all the uses of se today and you will only have activities to help you practice the passive and impersonal se in this chapter.

Impersonal se Se + 3rd person singular verb Se estudia mucho en la universidad
Passive se Se + 3rd personal singular or plural verb Se toman vacaciones
Reciprocal se Se + 3rd person plural verb Los hombres se miran (el uno al otro)
Se as an indirect object pronoun Se + lo/la/los/las +any verb conjugation Se lo dije
Reflexive se Se + 3rd person singular or plural Elle se peina
Intensifying se Se + 3rd person verb ¡Se comió todo!
Pronominal verbs with se Se + 3rd person verb.  These exist for all people and have a pronoun (me/te/nos/os) but in the 3rd Se cayó
Middle voice se Se + indirect object pronoun + conjugated verb (usually in the 3rd person but not always) Se me perdió el libro
