5.13.3 Grammar explanation: Superlatives

The final way we can use comparison is called the superlative.  This is when we say that something is better or worse, or the best (or the worst).

The structures are:

Mejor (best/better)…. que

Peor (worst/worse)….. que

You may already know these words as adjectives.  Perhaps you’ve called someone your “mejor amigo” or “peor enemigo”.

When we use them as comparisons they look like this:

Don Quijote es mejor libro que El cuatrimestre.

Las manzanas son peores frutas que las naranjas.

And when we use them as best/worst, it looks likes this:

¡Las manzanas son la mejor fruta!

Es el peor programa de televisión jamás.
