1.6 Ethical Dilemmas
As previously mentioned, ethical dilemmas often arise in SUD and mental health counseling, typically involving complex considerations of client welfare, confidentiality, professional boundaries, and informed consent, among many others. The examples of dilemmas described in this chapter are the tip of the iceberg. Throughout this textbook, we discuss many examples of common ethical dilemmas counselors face. We provide case studies, discussion questions, and robust opportunities for readers to consider how they might respond when faced with various ethical challenges.
