Case Study: Balancing Client Rights and Counselor Responsibilities in Mandated Reporting

Jordan is a licensed professional counselor working in a private practice specializing in adolescents with co-occurring mental health and substance use issues. One of her clients, 15-year-old Kayla, has been attending sessions for six months to address anxiety, depression, and occasional cannabis use. Kayla has made significant progress in therapy and values the trust and confidentiality she has with Jordan.

During a session, Kayla reveals that her stepfather, who has a history of alcohol use disorder, has been physically abusive toward her on several occasions. She describes an incident that occurred a week ago, saying, “It wasn’t that bad this time, and I handled it.” Kayla begs Jordan not to tell anyone, fearing her stepfather’s reaction and the potential for family separation.

Jordan recognizes her legal obligation as a mandated reporter to report suspected child abuse. However, she is also aware of the potential harm that breaking Kayla’s confidentiality could cause to their therapeutic alliance and Kayla’s emotional well-being.
