8.3 – Think and Apply Activity 1

Native American Homeland Activity

1) Look at the Native American Homeland Activity handout. The map below shows where different Native American tribes were living in North America in 1919. Many Native American peoples had been forced to leave their homelands by this time in history. By yourself or in pairs, complete the “see-think-wonder” chart below the map and share your responses with the class when finished.

When I look at the map, what do I…

SEE? THINK? WONDER?

Note: this map has a mix of Indigenous names that the tribes gave to themselves AND colonizers’ names for the tribes.

2) What happened to these tribes? Are they still around today? Are they in the same place?

Native peoples had (and sometimes continue to have) thriving cultures on the land where we all live today. Next, let’s do some research to learn which tribes lived/live in the area(s) that you now live in.

Open the Native Land Digital website. This is a site where you can type an address of any place and it will show which tribe(s) originally lived in that location. Try your school’s location as an example.

Then, if possible, go to the site yourself and under “search your address”, put in your home address (or an address from your home country) or ZIP code. Identify what local tribe(s) lived in that specific area and write the names in your notebook. Compare with other students – did you find the same information?

NEXT: Let’s learn and practice some new digital skills!
