6.3 – Think and Apply Activity 1
First Amendment Activity
1) Look at the First Amendment Activity handout and read the simple overview of the First Amendment:
| The First Amendment protects several basic freedoms and rights of all people living in the United States including the freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, the right to assemble, and the right to question the government. |
|---|
As a class, repeat the five freedoms identified in the First Amendment and WRITE them on your handout. Circle your favorite!
Answer key:
What are the five freedoms and rights listed in the First Amendment?
1. Freedom of speech
2. Freedom of religion
3. Freedom of the press
4. The right to assemble
5. The right to question the government
2) Take some time to think about the right that you decided is most important to you. There are no right or wrong answers! Use the organizer at the bottom of the handout to write about why you chose this freedom.
- I believe the freedom/right of _________________________ is the most important one in the First Amendment
- I think this freedom/right is most important because _____________________________________________________________________.
- If we didn’t have this freedom/right people could not _____________________________________________________________________.
- An example of this freedom/right in the community is _____________________________________________________________________.
3) After the class finishes writing, students can share their responses. After everyone has shared, ask yourself if anyone else’s ideas changed your mind about the most important freedom or right, and explain why!
