You are going to “teach” each other about a country’s form of government. HALF of the students should receive the “Government of Mexico” handout, and half of the students should receive the “Government of China” handout.

  1. In the groups, choose one student to read the country’s description to the others, and the group can discuss the questions that follow.
  2. Next, each student can find and pair up with another student from the opposite government group (one student from the “Mexico” group pairs up with one student from the “China” group). Read your country’s description to your partner twice (DON’T give away the answer of which form of government your country has!), and then ask the following question: “What form of government do you think (China/Mexico) has?” Then switch.
  3. Talk about the activity as a whole group. The forms of government for Mexico and China are very different. What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of both forms?
  4. Discuss the following questions together:
  • Why is it important to be able to disagree with the government?
  • What can happen when governments have control over religion and culture?
