14.7 – Think and Apply Activity 2

Before beginning this activity, review this brief summary of the reading text for Module 14: U.S. International Relations.

By 1900, the United States had become a strong global power and gained overseas territories. During the 20th century, it fought in both World Wars. After World War II, the U.S. and the Soviet Union became rival superpowers in the Cold War. They competed against each other without direct fighting. The Cold War ended when the Soviet Union collapsed. In the 21st century, the U.S. continues to play an important global role.

Social Message Song Analysis and Comparison

Search the internet for “anti-war songs” or “songs against injustice” + [your country’s name]. Complete the questions using the information you found. Share and discuss your answers with the whole class.

1. Name of the song: _______________________________
2. Name of the singer/group or artist: _______________________________
3. Year it was written or published: _______________________________
4. A brief summary about the war or idea the song was about: ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

5. Share the website(s) you visited. Were they secure? How do you know?

Have your teacher play videos or audio from some of the songs that you and other students find for the class. Compare the messages of 2-3 songs that are shared. Why are we comparing them in class? In a way, we’re engaging in international diplomacy!

Are there other ways that people can express their opinions/feelings about world events or conflicts?

NEXT: Let’s work together on a project about what we’ve learned!
