11.3 – Think and Apply Activity 1

Westward Expansion Visual Activity

1) Look at the Westward Expansion Visual Activity handout. Remember, as settlers began to move from the east coast of the United States toward the west coast, they were settling the lands where the Native American people already lived.

Watch an animated map showing how the homelands of the Native Americans have changed from 1776 to the present time in the geographic United States.

When you open up this web site, you will see two maps. They are the same–watch the larger one at the bottom. The map will change from 1776 to the present time. The blue color on the map represents Native American homeland. Complete the “see, think, and wonder” statements and share them with the class.

I SEE ___________________________________________________________________.

I THINK __________________________________________________________________.

I WONDER ______________________________________________________________.

2) Next, rewatch the animated map. If the blue on the map represents the Native American homeland, what does the gray on the map represent?

3) How did the lands Native people live on change from 1776 to the present day?

You will answer this question using some connectors that represent time (before, after, and since) that you have already learned. As a whole group, complete the first example using “before.” Then, continue writing on your own or with a partner, using the sentence starters with “after” and “since.” Share your answers with the class!

Before 1776______________________________________________________________.

Before European westward expansion ___________________________________.

After 1776 _______________________________________________________________.

After European westward expansion _____________________________________.

Since 1776 _______________________________________________________________.

Since European westward expansion ____________________________________.
