10.8 – Module Project and Reflection
Let’s write and talk about colonists’ ideas about the American Revolution!
You and your classmates will show why different colonists did or didn’t support the American Revolution.
Not everyone living in the American colonies wanted to be independent from Britain. Some people wanted independence, some did not, and some were in the middle. Women, Black people, and Native Americans fought on both sides during the revolution.
Look at the Module 10 Project – To Revolt or Not to Revolt? handout and break into small groups. Each group will take the role of a different person (1-4) living in the American colonies at the time of the revolution. Read the information for that person, and then answer the two questions that follow. When you’re finished, each group can present to the whole class about how the revolution would help or hurt their (fictional) person.
Big Questions
We are at the end of Module 10! Based on your learning, how would you answer these questions?
Do a 3-5-minute “quick write” about one or more of the questions below OR be prepared to discuss one/both of them.
Question #1: What causes people to start a revolution?
Question #2: What do people gain by becoming independent from another country?
Extend Your Learning!
Before the United States became the United States, there were 13 British colonies in North America. Even though they were located across the Atlantic Ocean from Great Britain, they were controlled by Great Britain. Great Britain and other European nations established colonies in many places in the world. These colonies would later gain their independence from one of these European countries.
Do an internet search and find one country that gained independence from another country (NOT the United States). Using the example and chart below, answer the following questions.
Send your answer to your teacher by email or WhatsApp.
- What is the name of the country today?
- What country did it gain its independence from?
- What year did the country gain its independence?
Internet search terms: List of countries that gained independence from Great Britain OR France OR Spain OR Portugal.
| Name of country today? | Country it gained its independence from? | Year it gained its independence? |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Great Britain (England) | 1776 |
